Garris Landing - Public Boat Ramp

  1. Hello
I think it is a poor state of affairs when you can spend $2,000,000.00 dollars on a pier that serves no purpose as a public boat landing. you have obviously not tried to launch a boat there at near low tide. Very dangerous. It seems strange that all the other ramps around charleston have nice floating docks. What’s the deal here. I don’t think the ferry money intake will ever pay for this pier.
You also have a problem this year with the local crabber trying to take charge of the ramp causing havic with everybody else.

  2. I don’t necessarily agree that all money that government spends on parks has to be returned as income. How can you calculate the value that Garrison Landing provides to the thousands of visitors who have never visited a refuge like Bull Island or kayaked in the pristine waters of Cape Romain? In my eyes, having valuable resources like this leads to high property taxes and tourism revenue for all of Charleston County.

As a resident of northern tip of Charleston County, I can attest to the fact that it’s a rare occasion when County taxes are invested in the area while we all pay our fair share of taxes too. Almost all of our money is poured into the City of Charleston and the urban sprawl surrounding it.

Most of that $2M went toward the building of the long sturdy dock. Floating docks on the ICW can be costly to maintain though because of the amount of wave action that they receive. If there were a need for the ability to tie up a boat to, I’m sure they would have built it, but as it was, I think they provided the dock as an access point to Bull’s Island Ferry and for viewing and fishing.
As for the ability to launch a boat at low-tide, I’ve never experienced it, but I’d say that they probably did their best with what they had. Most landings in the area have the same problem and it’s more a result of the gradual pitch of the land and the build up of sediment. I understand that the state has received some money to maintain the ICW this year and perhaps it will resolve some of these issues.
